Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Intense pulsed light is a relatively new and proven form of skin therapy. It is based on the emission of high intensity pulses of light (not lasers) that penetrate the skin and treat various skin problems.

Try IPL

How does it work?

Your doctor regulates the highly intense pulsed of light with the help of a computer. These pulses of light have a specific range of wavelengths, which heat up the target (the problem spots). The degree of heating and depth of penetration of the light are highly controlled so that problem areas of the skin are destroyed with minimal effect on the surrounding normal skin. This is why Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy seldom produces bad side effects when properly administered by your doctor.

What are the skin problems that can be improved with the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?

  • Freckles, sun spots, dull skin appearance due to excessive sun exposure and some other pigmentary complaints;
  • Redness of the skin due to rosacea, acne scars and fine broken veins in the skin;
  • Reduction of unwanted hair and
  • Fine wrinkles and prominent facial pores

What to expect after the procedure?

There is minimal 'downtime', if any at all, after the procedure. The treated area may be slightly red immediately after the treatment. This usually fades after several hours. You may wear your usual cosmetics and resume your normal activities after Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment. It is important that the treatment area is protected from sunlight. Therefore, it is advisable to apply a sunblock on the treated area before leaving the dermatology clinic.

How many sessions of treatment with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) do I need?

Some people may see results after one or two treatments depending on the problem. Some problems may require more sessions of treatment before improvement is noticeable. Subsequent monthly treatments will be needed to optimize the results. Consult your doctor to obtain a clearer picture of the number of sessions needed for optimal results.
